Success Starts with You
Success. As an entrepreneur, I constantly look for ways to continue to be successful. And I have learned that being successful as an entrepreneur doesn’t start with business-related success. Instead, it starts with my personal habits and attitudes.
Personal habits and attitudes spill over into every area of my life—and yours too. Here are some things I’ve learned from people that have contributed to my success:
Daily Gratitude Journaling
This might seem unusual, but it’s a great way to begin the day! Spend 15 minutes at the beginning of each day rethinking the positives of yesterday. Record them in a journal. In a short amount of time, you train your brain to see the positives going on throughout the day.
Focusing on the positives does several things:
- You are energized and have a great attitude to take on the day.
- You have increased energy instead of being drained by the mental toll of focusing on negativity.
- You infect the people around you with positivity
- You set a standard for people to follow when they are around you.
Our brains are designed to piece puzzles together, to identify and recognize patterns. By starting your day off with a recap of the positive patterns of your previous day, you’re retraining your brain to look for positive patterns.
Celebrate Your Victories
It is easy to beat yourself up for the things that go wrong. If only, I should have, I wish I would have—stop that thought process. Celebrate the victories! Brag on the wins. Share the big deals. The goal is success, so share the small and big successes!
Turn Fear Around
Everyone has fears; entrepreneurs are no different. Being an entrepreneur makes a statement that you have overcome the fear of doing what you are doing. You’ve pushed through the fear that holds so many others back from following their dreams. That triumph should be in the gratitude journal and be celebrated! It is a victory!
Are you still fearful even as you push through the anxiety of entrepreneurship day after day? Examine your fears; ask the why and what. What are you afraid of? Why are you afraid of it? If you can’t make the fear go away, then accept it and move on. Fear is not the end; failure to move on is!
Having the fun conversations are easy. Having the difficult conversations aren’t. Don’t let that keep you from having them, though. Addressing the difficult topic or the difficult person is better than letting resentment be the result of avoiding the conversation. Life happens! How you step up and deal with it is the difference between being successful or unsuccessful.
Do you struggle with self-confidence? Self-confidence can be defined as the non-negotiable feeling of trust in one’s own abilities, qualities, and judgments. Be clear on your goals and desired outcomes. Become comfortable communicating and in saying no. Stand up for yourself! Know you are worthy of the success you’ve achieved. You are worthy of happiness.
Successful entrepreneurs read almost everything they can get their hands on, and they look for free resources. Books, blogs, articles, magazines—all are worth reading and are inexpensive.
You can utilize other resources as well. Borrow books from your local library. Online blogs and magazine articles are free. Find a book you want to read but don’t want to buy and isn’t at your library? Type the name of the book and the word PDF into Google and you might find it for free. Many authors have made free PDFs of their books available on the internet.
Chaos is a fundamental part of being a busy and successful entrepreneur. Everything cannot be controlled, but it must be handled. Mistakes will be made, difficult conversations must be had, people will need to be fired, you will be taken advantage of, and you will lose money and need to recover. Not every idea you have will work out. Accept that chaos will happen. Study it, face, it, conquer it. Successfully handling each run-in with chaos puts you one step closer to achieving your goal as a successful entrepreneur!
Put these seven habits in your toolbox, implement them into your life, and see how much more successful you become. Don’t forget to celebrate that success and record it in your gratitude journal!
